Spotlight on Lower Street
Surprisingly for some visitors, and indeed even some residents, Lower Street in Dartmouth is not as well explored as it deserves especially as it now boasts an increasing number of vibrant shops – Dartmouth’s ‘West End’ if you like!

It’s home to the famous Café Alf Resco, possibly the busiest place in Dartmouth, certainly for morning coffee and breakfast, as well as the famous Dartmouth Arms overlooking Bayards Cove. Many visitors come off the lower ferry and pass down Lower Street and might forget to venture back. But as Sarah Hanafee of Danielli’s says “this end of the town seems to be going from strength to strength and we have a great variety of shops and restaurants.

It’s great watching cars come off the lower ferry and you literally see the passengers driving along with a look of awe as they enter Dartmouth for the first time! Obviously with Bayards Cove at the end it is a great draw to get people to venture down the whole street.” Other retailers along the street have noticed that trade builds up during the afternoon as visitors take a while to discover its shops.

Some have commented that a sign should be erected at the junction with Newcomen Road to shout the fact that there are more shops and bars to explore just a short walk further on.” This brief By The Dart guide will, hopefully, encourage you to do just that!
