Dartmouth History Research Group
www.dartmouth-history.org.uk We have paid for
microfiche copies of the parish registers of births, marriages and deaths of all
three churches to be placed in Dartmouth Library. Also in the Library is a typed
copy of the 1861 Census, put onto a database in a considerable group effort,
along with the microfiches of the original.
Soon we hope to put there the 1891 census. We have copies of the
gravestones in all the churchyards. This
enables anyone wishing to research their family history to do so in the town,
without a lengthy journey to Exeter. Other activities include
transcribing and summarizing deeds of properties and storing copies, which are a
rich source of information on the history of the town. We tape the memories of
older people, and anyone with stories to tell. The Dartmouth Chronicle has begun
to publish monthly articles written by our members on subjects of general
interest which often generate more offers of information. Our object is to research and preserve for the future the heritage of the past. We value all previous skill and experience, especially that of born and bred Dartmothians. Now that we are dipping a toe into the waters of the World Wide Web we hope to make many new friends from all over the globe.
