Page Two of Things to See and Do

St Saviour's Church originally consecrated in 1372 on the site of an earlier chapel and rebuilt during the 1630's. The church contains a fine wooden screen and an exceptional 14th century door. A highly unusual place of worship and containing the famous

Hawley Brass

St Petrox Church has some of the most stunning views in the country! Probably a monks cell when first recorded in 1192. Rebuilt early in the 17th century, this church has a fascinating collection of brasses and family memorials. Well worth a visit - perhaps by river taxi.

Kingswear Castle completed between 1501 and 1503. It fell into disuse, but was fortified to defend the harbour during the Civil War 1642/1645 and, along with Dartmouth Castle, kept the town safe from seaborne attacks for 600 years. Now owned by the Landmark Trust and used as a holiday retreat. It is possible to walk from Kingswear past the Castle.

Britannia Royal Naval College completed during 1905 replacing two old training ships that had been moored in the river. A magnificent example of Edwardian architecture. Fully escorted tours of about 2½ hours duration. Details available from Dartmouth Tourist Office tel.834224

The Newcomen Engine

One of the town's star attractions. It is well worth visiting Thomas Newcomen's famous engine if only to feel very small standing beside this huge machine!

Royal Avenue Gardens a place to sit and relax for more than a hundred years. The gardens have been completely refurbished and the newly restored fountain is a fine Victorian water feature. The Bandstand is in use for a variety of events during the summer months.

Sharpham Vineyard and Creamery. The Sharpham Estate is situated above the River Dart. The 500 acre estate comprises vineyards, woodlands and several farms which encircle Sharpham House, designed by Sir |Robert Taylor in 1770. There is plenty to see here including the vineyard, winery, creamery and highly picturesque walks.
