• Bid for £4.7m for trail linking Plymouth and Dartmouth is rejected

  A bid for a £4.7million contribution towards a heritage trail that would have linked Plymouth and Dartmouth with other locations connected to the story of the mayflower has been rejected.

  The project team lost its bid for a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the Mayflower trail, part of the 2020 celebrations commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ journey. The team say they are still committed to making the trail a reality.

  The trail would connect Plymouth with Dartmouth, Southampton, Southwark, Southend, Harwich, Lincoln, Scrooby, Babworth, Gainsborough, Boston, Austerfield and Doncaster, which all have links to the Mayflower story

  Chief Executive of Mayflower 400, Charles Hackett, said the team was still committed to delivering the scheme, reports plymouthherald.

  “This incredible journey is happening – even if there are one or two challenges on the way,” he said. “This anniversary gives us an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to inspire people in our communities and across the country with the history of that iconic voyage.

  “We’ve been inspired by the energy and ideas that are coming together and are already talking to Compact partners and the HLF about how we can take the national trail forward.”
