Lower Collaton Farm, Dartmouth
Lower Collaton Farm is a traditional old Devonshire farmhouse, dating back to Domesday, nestled in a peaceful secluded valley, only six miles from Dartmouth, Totnes, Kingsbridge and award winning local beaches such as Blackpool Sands. It is an ideal base for coastal and moorland walking, and for visiting the many local gardens such as Agatha Christie’s Greenway and the D’Oyley Carte’s Collaton Fishacre, (both National Trust). Foodies will enjoy the fish at Mitch Tonks’ famous Sea Horse restaurant in Dartmouth. There are many more fine eating places to try close by!
Lower Collaton is a small working farm, and apart from the hens in the yard and the ducks on the pond, Rosie and James have a very small mixed flock of Shetland, Jacob and Zwartble sheep. Several are particularly friendly, and guests are welcome to be introduced at closer quarters. Three of the old barns have been skilfully converted into comfortable and characterful holiday accommodation. This is available from Friday to Friday (The Stables and The Old Granary), and Saturday to Saturday (The Byre). Three night or four night short breaks are welcome outside peak season.
The Stables, which sleeps four, has an upside down layout, with open plan on the first floor and double and twin bedrooms plus bathroom below. The ancient beams are exposed, giving the cottage lots of character. There is an outside seating area and a further guests area to the rear. It is available from Easter to the end of September. Children are welcome, and a stair gate, high chair and travel cot are available. A dog is welcome at a weekly charge of £20, on the understanding that it does not chase our hens!
The Byre, which sleeps four also, used to be where the cows were milked, and their names from their mangers are displayed on the living room wall. Like The Stables, the bedooms re on the gound floor. They are both en suite. Double bedroom with fitted cupboards, and dressing table, with bath (+ shower attachment) bidet, w.c. and basin. The second bedroom is a twin with shower, basin and w.c. The single mattresses can be zipped and linked together to make a second double bedroom if preferred. Upstairs is a spacious open plan living area with dining table and chairs at one end. The ancient scissor beams are exposed, giving the room lots of character, and the windw gives lovely views of our valley. The kitchen is next door and is well equipped fpr cooking and eating in.
Tucked into the opposite side of the courtyard is The Old Granary, a delightful and charming cosy cottage for just two. With maple floor and beamed ceiling, the downstairs bedroom has an adjacent wet room with shower, basin and w.c. Up the winding stairs is the kitchen and living area. Outside is a pretty little garden. It’s available throughout the year, and for short breaks out of season. This is a comfy cottage for two, but is not suitable for dogs or small children.
